Are you familiar with the different filters in your car? It helps to have at least a passing understanding of what they are and what they do. Here’s some information on filters from SDS Automotive that can help you.
Passenger Air Filter
The passenger air filter, also called the cabin air filter, is the last air filter between you and your passengers and outside air. You can always open a window, but you also end up with all sorts of debris and dust in the car with you. When you’ve got the air or heat running, the air that comes in through the intake manifold first goes through the main air filter and then the passenger air filter before getting to you.
Air Filter
The main air filter is the one that ensures nothing from outside the car gets into the car’s engine. This filter can get pretty dirty, so it’s a good idea to check it once in a while yourself to see if there’s anything big in it. Anything from dirt to leaves and other debris can get caught up in this filter. That’s good, because that means none of that stuff got into your engine.
Fuel Filter
Gas looks pretty clean, doesn’t it? It really isn’t, though. And your tank has sediment and debris in it, too. So the fuel filter’s job is to catch all of that gunk and keep it out of the fuel lines and definitely out of the fuel injectors. If the fuel filter fails, that means that there’s stuff in the engine that doesn’t need to be there and that can cause damage.
Oil Filter
Your car’s oil filter ensures that the oil in your car’s engine is able to last longer. Oil is a recirculating fluid, which means that it runs through the engine, cleaning and lubricating, before going through the oil filter. After that, it takes another round through the engine, over and over. The oil filter does its part to remove anything that the oil collects along the way so that it doesn’t get redeposited back in the engine.
